A private jet carrying six people from Mexico crashed near Laredo International Airport in Texas, killing one person and injuring five others after reporting mechanical problems during its approach, authorities said.
The aircraft went down Tuesday on Loop 20, a major roadway near the airport in the border city of Laredo. Emergency crews and nearby motorists rushed to the scene as flames and thick smoke engulfed parts of the wreckage.
Video recorded after the crash showed bystanders and first responders working together to help passengers escape from the damaged aircraft. Some rescuers used tools, including what appeared to be a shovel and a sledgehammer, to gain access and assist those trapped inside.
Police said five survivors were transported to hospital and were reported to be in stable condition. The identity of the person who died has not yet been released.
Investigators said the jet had departed from Los Cabos, Mexico, and was bound for Austin, Texas. During the flight, the crew reported significant mechanical difficulties while attempting to reach Laredo, according to airport officials.
The crash occurred close to the airport, located roughly 150 miles southwest of San Antonio. As the aircraft came down, it also struck a vehicle traveling on the roadway. Investigators have not yet determined which part of the plane made contact with the vehicle or the extent of any damage to those inside.
Emergency personnel responding to the incident faced hazardous conditions due to the fire and smoke. Five first responders later received treatment for smoke inhalation, police said.
The wreckage prompted the closure of Loop 20, an important transportation route through the city. Authorities said the highway was expected to remain shut while investigators document the scene and remove debris.
Multiple agencies are participating in the investigation, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s mechanical condition, flight history and communications with air traffic personnel to determine the cause of the crash.
The incident remains under investigation, and officials have not yet released findings regarding what led to the aircraft’s reported mechanical problems or its subsequent crash.
